The Young Men’s Christian Association (YMCA) of Fiji, established in 1970 and fully localized in 1976, has appointed Taniela Colomoto as its new general secretary. This transition was reported on June 15, 1976, marking a significant milestone in the organization’s history. Mr. Colomoto succeeds Dennis Oliver, who was integral to the establishment of the YMCA in Fiji and will now continue as an advisor and training officer.

Colomoto’s journey with the YMCA began at its inception. He worked diligently for the youth’s betterment in the country and held the roles of assistant secretary and deputy general secretary before achieving his current position. One of his primary objectives as general secretary will be to forge new international connections that could potentially provide financial support for the variety of programs aimed at both rural and urban communities.

Dennis Oliver’s impactful tenure had established a strong presence for the YMCA, with initiatives reaching into all 85 villages where YMCA clubs were formed. His commitment to the organization and its programs has built a solid foundation for Colomoto to build upon.

This appointment is seen as a continuation of a legacy focused on youth engagement and development, which is echoed in the recent initiatives from various organizations in Fiji that prioritize community and youth support. For instance, the Methodist Church in Fiji is also focusing on youth programs, highlighting the collective efforts to address social challenges facing the younger demographic in the region.

With Mr. Colomoto at the helm, there is a hopeful optimism about the future of the YMCA in Fiji. His extensive experience and dedication to youth service suggest that the organization will further enhance its role in fostering community development and addressing the needs of the nation’s youth.
