The Yasawa Saints made history by winning the title at the inaugural Sports Well League Tag Championship, defeating the Umina Bunnies with a score of 16-12 in a thrilling final held at Churchill Park in Lautoka. The Umina Bunnies, hailing from northern Sydney, were the only overseas team participating in this two-day tournament dedicated entirely to women’s league tag.
The championship featured four teams: Yasawa Saints, Nadi Eels, VT Bears, and the Umina Bunnies. This event is notable for being a significant milestone for women’s participation in sports, with the Yasawa Saints being recognized as the first champions of this pioneering tournament.
Jone Wesele, the Muaira State Development Officer, highlighted the tournament’s crucial role in promoting gender inclusivity in sports. Wesele expressed, “Often, sports events predominantly feature men, which is why this program aims to empower women and encourage their involvement in the sport. It motivates women to take initiative and participate.”
The inaugural Sports Well League Tag Championship not only champions the empowerment of women but also fosters international ties, laying a robust foundation for the advancement of women’s rugby league in Fiji.
This event can pave the way for greater recognition of women’s sports in the region and inspire future generations of female athletes.
