Wuthering Heights casting sparks debate around Margot Robbie and Jacob Elordi

Australian actress Margot Robbie has addressed the criticism surrounding her and Jacob Elordi’s casting in Emerald Fennell’s adaptation of “Wuthering Heights.” The “Barbie” star, 35, who is blonde, contrasts sharply with the original depiction of Catherine Earnshaw, a character from Emily Brontë’s 1847 novel, who is portrayed as a brunette and a teenager. This disparity has prompted some backlash even before the film’s release.

In an interview with British Vogue, Robbie acknowledged the criticism, saying, “I get it.” She emphasized that the public should reserve their judgment until the film is actually seen. Elordi, who plays Heathcliff and is described as “dark-skinned,” has also faced scrutiny due to the differences in appearance from traditional portrayals. Yet, Robbie pointed out that many actors who have played Heathcliff did not fit a uniform description.

Robbie expressed her admiration for Elordi’s performance, dubbing him “our generation’s Daniel Day-Lewis.” She urged audiences to keep an open mind, stating, “I saw him play Heathcliff. And he is Heathcliff. I’d say, just wait. Trust me, you’ll be happy.” She noted the legacy of renowned actors who have embodied the role, including Laurence Olivier, Richard Burton, Ralph Fiennes, and Tom Hardy, highlighting the honor of being part of such a lineage.

Emerald Fennell also defended her choices in casting, emphasizing Robbie’s “supersized star power” that she believes is necessary for the complex character of Cathy. Fennell described Cathy as “willful, mean, a recreational sadist, a provocateur,” adding that the goal was to select an actress who embodies a character people can both love and forgive despite her darker traits.

The anticipation for the film suggests that diverse interpretations of classic characters may open new discussions and appreciate the depth of the story. Through this modern adaptation, there is hope that audiences will embrace the film’s fresh take on beloved literary figures.
