Wellington Phoenix has announced that they have mutually agreed to part ways with David Ball, who has been an integral player for the club for over five years. This decision comes as the club prepares to take advantage of the upcoming A-League transfer window which opens this Thursday.

Ball, 35, expressed his sentiments in a statement, noting that the Phoenix played a significant role in both his and his family’s lives. He leaves the club with a record of 15 goals and 26 assists from 122 appearances, contributing to the team’s success in reaching the finals four times in five seasons. His most notable achievement was being named Player of the Year in 2020 after his standout performances helped the Phoenix secure their highest-ever regular-season finish.

His departure follows a season where he found limited playing time, featuring only as a substitute in the opening match of the current season. Coach Giancarlo Italiano has been favoring younger players, leading to Ball’s decision to seek new opportunities, while the club aims to fill the gap left by his departure as they currently sit in a challenging 10th place in the league standings.

Ball’s contributions were not just limited to scoring; his leadership and experience have been crucial, especially during difficult periods, including the challenges posed by COVID-19. Club director of football Shaun Gill described him as “the ultimate pro,” while captain Alex Rufer reflected on the close camaraderie developed during their time together.

Looking ahead, Ball hopes to continue his playing career, possibly remaining in New Zealand, but for now, he prioritizes spending time with his family. His legacy at Wellington Phoenix, cemented by his dedication and influence, sets a positive tone as the club seeks fresh talent to rejuvenate its roster ahead of a crucial period in the A-League.

This split allows both Ball and Wellington Phoenix to pursue new directions, with optimism for the future as the transfer window opens. Fans of the club will certainly remember Ball’s contributions fondly as they look to rebuild and improve in the coming matches.
