A 26-year-old waitress in Tailevu faces serious legal charges for allegedly providing alcohol to her nearly two-year-old nephew during a drinking party. The incident gained widespread attention after she posted a photo on social media showing her nephew holding a glass of beer.

She was apprehended by authorities on January 25, 2025, during questioning and subsequently released; however, she now faces charges under Section 59 of the Juveniles Act, 1973, which prohibits supplying intoxicating liquor to minors.

Currently in police custody, she is expected to make an appearance at the Nausori Magistrates Court later today. The case has ignited concern among community leaders and child protection advocates. Officials from the Fiji Police Force and the Ministry for Women, Children, and Social Protection have underscored the critical need for adults to safeguard the well-being of children, as exposing minors to alcohol carries severe legal implications.

Sashi Kiran, the Minister for Women, Children, and Social Protection, voiced her concern over this blatant violation of children’s rights and urged the community to prioritize reporting harmful actions instead of publicly sharing them online. This incident serves as a crucial reminder of the importance of responsible adult behavior and highlights the necessity for community education regarding the risks associated with alcohol and the essential supervision of young children.

This unfortunate situation provides an opportunity to foster discussions about the dangers of alcohol consumption and the protection of minors. By engaging in these conversations, communities can work towards creating a safer environment for children, transforming negative situations into valuable learning experiences for families. These proactive steps can play a significant role in ensuring that future generations grow up in a supportive and secure atmosphere.
