A 26-year-old waitress is facing legal repercussions after allegedly giving her 23-month-old nephew alcohol during a drinking party in Tailevu. The incident, which took place on January 25, 2025, came to light when the niece shared a photo on social media showing the young child holding a glass of beer, prompting an investigation by authorities.
Following her arrest, she was charged with providing intoxicating or spirituous liquor to a minor, as stipulated under Section 59 of the Juveniles Act 1973. She currently remains in police custody and is scheduled to appear before the Nausori Magistrates Court.
Community leaders and advocates for child protection have expressed their alarm regarding this situation, underscoring the important role adults play in protecting children. Minister for Women, Children, and Social Protection, Sashi Kiran, has publicly denounced the incident as a serious infringement on children’s rights. She has urged community members to prioritize reporting such harmful behaviors instead of sharing them on social media platforms.
This case underscores the pressing issues related to child safety and the responsibility adults have in preventing adverse situations. It presents a vital opportunity for educating the public about the dangers of exposing minors to alcohol and the necessity of vigilant supervision. Kiran’s appeal for community engagement represents a constructive approach towards creating safer environments for children, emphasizing the importance of nurturing upbringing. Through continued dialogue and advocacy, there remains hope for enhancing children’s welfare and protection in Fiji.
