“Voice Your Future: Join Fiji’s Budget Consultations!”

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Finance, Professor Biman Prasad, has called on Fijians to actively participate in the upcoming 2025-2026 National Budget Consultations. These sessions are being organized across the nation, with the most recent taking place at the Korovuto College Hall in Nadi, where Prof Prasad engaged with citizens from various backgrounds including community leaders, farmers, and students.

During the consultation, Prof Prasad emphasized the importance of public participation in shaping the national budget, referring to it as “your budget.” He reassured attendees that their input is vital for addressing national priorities. The discussions touched upon significant issues such as the rise in Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs), infrastructure challenges in rural areas, and the recent increase in the minimum wage to $5 an hour. Participants expressed their concerns about deteriorating roads and unsafe crossings, particularly affecting school children, and stressed the need for improvements in rural infrastructure.

Prof Prasad acknowledged these challenges and reiterated the government’s commitment to strengthening public health infrastructure, enhancing employment opportunities, and creating incentives to retain skilled professionals within Fiji. He also highlighted the government’s focus on stabilizing the economy through prudent fiscal reforms while raising household incomes and maintaining key social services.

The consultations are not unlike previous efforts aimed at fostering transparency and inclusivity in government budgeting processes. Past initiatives have seen positive feedback, prompting the government to seek more structured, sector-specific input in an effort to enhance community engagement.

This consultative approach aims to build a stronger connection between the government and its citizens, demonstrating a hopeful commitment to inclusive governance. As Fijians voice their opinions and concerns, the government aims to create a budget that effectively addresses the needs of all citizens, paving the way for a brighter future.

The next session in this nationwide consultation series is set to take place at the Girmit Centre in Lautoka, providing another opportunity for public engagement ahead of the budget’s presentation in Parliament scheduled for June 27.
