Urgent Need: Fiji Battles Drug Crisis

Fiji urgently requires a drug rehabilitation center, according to Fiji Council of Churches (FCOC) president Reverend Simione Tugi. Tugi highlighted that the country’s escalating drug addiction problem, driven by the illicit drug trade, has led to a rise in drug-related crime and violence.

“We desperately need a rehabilitation center,” Tugi stated. “Setting up a drug rehabilitation center in Fiji with appropriate programs will be a crucial step forward in combating drug addiction and restoring individuals’ lives.”

The FCOC is collaborating with California-based Drug Free World to raise awareness about drug issues in Fiji. An invitation was sent to the Minister for Women and Children Lynda Tabuya and Health Minister Dr. Atonio Lalabalavu to meet with ambassador Jessica Brown from June 19 to June 21 to discuss establishing a rehab center in Fiji. However, the meeting was postponed. Brown is expected to return to Fiji in August or September, at which point another appointment will be arranged.

“We will make another appointment to meet them then,” Tugi added.
