Fiji’s national football coach, Rob Sherman, has voiced concerns regarding the A-League’s visa regulations, which he believes hinder the potential of talented players from Oceania. He particularly pointed out Fijian prospect Thomas Dunn, who previously tried out for Sydney FC but couldn’t secure a contract due to these restrictive rules. Each player from Oceania is classified as an overseas player in the A-League, which consumes valuable visa spots that clubs are reluctant to dedicate to untested talent, instead opting for players with established international experience.

Sherman is advocating for a revision of the current visa policy and suggests that if the A-League were to allow additional visa slots specifically for Oceania players, it would create more opportunities for young talents like Dunn. He emphasized that with these changes, many young Fijian players could excel in the A-League.

As Fiji gears up for the semi-final of the 2026 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers against New Zealand, Sherman highlighted the importance of players who are currently training overseas, as they are exposed to modern training methods and diverse playing styles. This exposure could be critical for enhancing the overall performance of the team.

In preparation for the match on March 21 in Wellington, the team will engage in three warm-up matches, including competitions against Auckland United and Wellington Phoenix. Sherman strongly believes that the mix of experienced players and fresh talent will be crucial for Fiji’s success on the international stage.

As the Bula Boys embark on this pivotal journey, there is hope that changes in visa regulations will emerge, allowing more young athletes like Dunn to take advantage of professional opportunities. Such developments could not only uplift Fijian football but also inspire future generations of athletes in the region, fostering a promising future for sports in Fiji.
