A powerful display of solidarity took place in Labasa as students united with members of various public service sectors, including the police, military, fire, and prison officers, to observe the International Day for the Prevention of Substance Abuse and Illicit Trafficking. The event featured a march through the town, where participants showcased their commitment to addressing the escalating drug problem affecting communities within the Northern Division.
Rural and Maritime Development Minister Sakiasi Ditoka, who officiated at the event, highlighted the detrimental impact of drug abuse on families in the North and emphasized the need for a united front in the battle against this crisis. “We cannot fight this battle alone. It requires everyone’s effort — schools, parents, communities and law enforcement working hand-in-hand,” he stated. Mr. Ditoka urged students to take on the role of positive role models and to report any drug-related activities they observe in their neighborhoods.
This year’s observance focused on calling for heightened action across all sectors to prevent substance abuse, aiming to protect the next generation from its harmful effects. The collaborative approach mirrors prior calls from national leaders emphasizing the vital importance of education, community engagement, and collective responsibility in combating substance abuse crises.
For instance, Deputy Prime Minister Professor Biman Prasad and Minister for Home Affairs Pio Tikoduadua have consistently urged the youth to prioritize healthy choices and inspire others to reject drugs. A similar sentiment was echoed during previous festivities, where leaders encouraged students and their families to work together to create supportive environments that foster resilience against negative influences.
The solidarity witnessed on this significant day reflects a hopeful path forward. With strategic initiatives and community cooperation, there is optimism that Fiji can combat the drug crisis effectively, paving the way for a healthier, safer future for all. The engagement of youth in these efforts is crucial, as they represent not just the future, but also the present catalysts for positive change in their communities.
