Two hundred educators in Fiji are participating in the inaugural Access Teacher Training Workshop, a pivotal initiative funded by a US$40,000 grant from the United States government. Launched by Stephanie Fitzmaurice, the Regional Public Affairs Officer at the U.S. Embassy, the workshop emphasizes the U.S. commitment to enhancing education and empowering teachers in Fiji.

The Fijian Teachers Association (FTA) Youth Wing is organizing these workshops specifically for English teachers, focusing on literacy training that aligns with Fiji’s new literacy curriculum for primary education. The training sessions are being conducted across various centers in Suva, Rakiraki, and Nadi, ensuring that a wide range of educators can access this beneficial professional development.

Renowned facilitators for the workshops include Dr. Doaa Rashed, an English Language Specialist from Rutgers University; Setareki Delana from Fiji’s Ministry of Education; and Torika Jitoko, a Literacy and Numeracy Coach with the Australia-Fiji Program Support Facility. In her remarks, Fitzmaurice commended the dedication of the teachers, noting their significant role in making positive changes within classrooms across Fiji. She called for ongoing investment in education, encouraging collective efforts to inspire learning and unlock new opportunities for the youth.

Additionally, the workshop is part of the broader English Access Microscholarship Program, which aims to provide talented secondary school students globally with foundational English language skills. Launched in 2004, this program has positively impacted over 200,000 students in more than 90 countries, fostering essential communication, leadership, and life skills that pave the way for future educational and professional opportunities.

This comprehensive initiative marks a significant step towards improving educational standards and teacher capabilities in Fiji. By investing in educators, the Access Teacher Training Workshop not only benefits the immediate participants but also establishes a foundation for a brighter future for the nation’s students. It reflects a hopeful outlook regarding the educational landscape in Fiji, showcasing the transformative potential of international partnerships in education and the promise of a supportive learning environment for future generations.
