The Minister for Agriculture, Waterways and Sugar Industry, Tomasi Tunabuna, has expressed enthusiasm for his new role, highlighting the diversification of the sugar industry as a primary goal that he has harbored since the early days of his career as a technical officer. This transition in leadership comes after Tunabuna took over the sugar portfolio earlier this month from Charan Jeath Singh, who previously served as the Minister for Multi-Ethnic Affairs, Heritage and Arts.

Tunabuna reflected on his long-standing vision for the sugar sector, stating, “I am excited; diversifying the sugar industry has always been my dream since I was a technical officer.” His extensive experience, including his previous work within the Ministry of Agriculture, has equipped him with a comprehensive understanding of the industry’s challenges and potential.

He emphasized the importance of collaboration between both sugar and non-sugar sectors, which he believes is vital for the industry’s growth. Tunabuna is aware that there may be varying public perspectives regarding his appointment but remains committed to instigating positive changes that will benefit stakeholders across the sector.

Looking ahead, Tunabuna is scheduled to meet with Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka next week to discuss strategies moving forward, which will be followed by a formal briefing on the sugar industry. As he embarks on this new chapter, there is a sense of optimism surrounding his leadership and the future of the sugar industry.
