Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Professor Biman Prasad has emphasized that the rehabilitation and reintegration of former inmates is a collective responsibility that extends beyond the Fiji Corrections Service to all of society. Speaking at the Yellow Ribbon Walk event in Nausori, he underlined the importance of supporting those who have made mistakes and are seeking a chance to reintegrate into the community.

Prasad described the Yellow Ribbon initiative as more than just a symbolic gesture; it is a movement calling for societal change in perception towards ex-offenders. He stated, “Rehabilitation and reintegration are national duties aligned with our Coalition Government’s vision under the National Development Plan 2025-2029.” This reflects a commitment to not only empower individuals but to foster unity within the community.

The program aims to facilitate the return of ex-offenders to their homes, where they can contribute positively to society. Additionally, Prasad highlighted the government’s dedication to modernizing correctional facilities and enhancing rehabilitation programs to reduce recidivism. The 2025-2026 budget has allocated $62.5 million for these initiatives, marking an increase of $4.8 million compared to the previous budget.

This approach aligns closely with the overarching goals of the Fiji Corrections Service, which has previously emphasized the critical role of community involvement in the rehabilitation process. Programs like the Yellow Ribbon Walk, aimed at raising awareness and building support for reintegration, are essential elements of this strategy.

By fostering an environment where society embraces second chances, Prasad’s comments reflect a hopeful perspective for former inmates and their potential to transform their lives. The collaborative efforts of the government, community members, and organizations will be crucial in creating a supportive framework for successful reintegration.

Overall, this movement not only seeks to improve the lives of those who have stumbled but also emphasizes the shared responsibility we all have in creating an inclusive and compassionate society.
