The tragic passing of two young individuals, Pisawaqa Sirovoama, 20, and Meri Nadaba, 25, has left their families and friends devastated, marking an increase in road fatalities. Both died in a vehicular accident on Saturday morning.

The incident occurred around 2 a.m. on the Queens Highway at Kulukulu Sigatoka. Reports suggest that a vehicle, allegedly driven by someone under the influence of alcohol, failed to negotiate a bend and struck an electric power pole. There were four people in the vehicle; while two tragically lost their lives, one was hospitalized, and another has since been discharged.

In a statement, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Mitieli Divuana expressed sadness over the two fatal accidents that took place within a 24-hour period that weekend. He emphasized the importance of responsible driving, urging motorists to prioritize the safety of their passengers and pedestrians. The Fiji Police Force, in conjunction with the Land Transport Authority, plans to enhance their presence on the roads to ensure public safety.

Mereani Qarikau, a coworker and friend of Meri Nadaba, spoke of her disbelief upon learning of her friend’s untimely death. They had last communicated the night before, sharing moments from a party in Nadi. Qarikau expressed deep sorrow for the loss, reflecting on Nadaba’s kind nature and the impact her absence will have on their workplace.

Additionally, family members are grappling with their grief. Rosi Tagilala, a cousin of the deceased, recounted the emotional pain felt within the family, stating that the shock is still overwhelming. Both women were first cousins from Bua, Vanua Levu, and their early demise has left a significant void in their family.

In a sobering context, the current road death toll stands at 61, a slight decrease from 76 during the same period last year.

As a community, it’s essential to reflect on these incidents to bolster our awareness of road safety and the value of life. The call for responsible conduct on the roads resonates now more than ever, with hopes that such tragic losses can spur more preventive measures and create a safer driving environment.

In summary, while the loss of Pisawaqa and Meri is heartbreaking, it serves as a critical reminder of the importance of safety and responsible behavior on the roads.
