Two tragic accidents were reported yesterday morning in the Western Division, resulting in the loss of two lives and leaving others injured. According to Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Mitieli Divuana, both incidents took place in Lautoka during the early hours.

The first fatal incident occurred shortly after midnight, where a 38-year-old driver reportedly lost control of his vehicle on Barara Flat while heading towards Nadi. Despite being rushed to Lautoka Hospital alongside three passengers, the driver succumbed to his injuries. Two passengers are currently in stable condition, while the third has been discharged.

The second accident, which appears to be a hit-and-run, happened around 3 AM on Drasa Avenue. A 26-year-old man was discovered by a passerby and was transported to Lautoka Hospital, where he was declared dead upon arrival. SSP Divuana mentioned that traffic investigators are actively seeking details about the vehicle involved.

In another serious incident reported this morning in Wailada, Lami, a 22-year-old sustained significant injuries after crashing into a parked truck’s trailer. The victim was taken to the Colonial War Memorial Hospital, where he remains hospitalized.

Currently, the road death toll stands at 50, a decrease compared to 71 fatalities during the same period last year, highlighting potential positive trends in road safety awareness.

As investigations continue into these incidents, it is a stark reminder of the importance of road safety for all users. It is hoped that these tragic events will prompt increased caution among drivers and encourage community initiatives focusing on road safety measures.
