A 47-year-old taxi driver is currently in police custody following the tragic death of his partner, 28-year-old Karishma Chaudhry, who was a mother of four and reportedly one month pregnant at the time of her death. The incident occurred in Kerebula, Nadi, where Ms. Chaudhry was found with visible injuries to her neck, raising significant concerns surrounding the circumstances of her passing.

According to her mother, Nileshma Singh, the family was alerted to the situation by neighbors. “This is my eldest daughter; she was my pillar of strength,” she expressed, emphasizing the devastating impact of the loss on her family. Ms. Singh recounted that her daughter had lived with the suspect for a decade but noted that there had been family issues over the past two years. She lamented the loss of the expected joy of welcoming a fifth grandchild, reflecting on Ms. Chaudhry’s role as a loving mother.

Police spokesperson Ana Naisoro indicated that they received the report around 8 a.m. and promptly arrested the suspect for questioning. The Fiji Women Crisis Centre director, Shamima Ali, labeled the situation “tragic,” calling for society to condemn acts of violence against women while urging the government to take strong leadership in addressing these issues. She stressed the need for dedicated funding to ensure effective prevention and support services.

This incident is a stark reminder of the ongoing issue of domestic violence in Fiji, where nearly two out of three women experience physical or sexual violence in their lifetime. The Ministry of Women, Children, and Social Protection has previously expressed outrage and sorrow regarding similar incidents, emphasizing the urgent need for community collaboration to combat violence against women and girls.

The recent developments reflect a broader societal concern, and it is imperative that communities come together to create safe environments for all women and girls. By fostering awareness and providing resources, there is hope for change and prevention of such heart-wrenching events in the future.
