A SAMOAN family has tragically lost a second child to dengue fever within days, marking a heartbreaking increase in the disease’s toll as the nation struggles to cope with a widespread outbreak. The two-year-old boy passed away just days after his nine-year-old brother, raising the total number of dengue-related fatalities in Samoa to five.

Samoa has faced a significant rise in dengue fever cases since April, with over 2,000 confirmed instances reported so far this year. In response to the alarming situation, the government extended the closure of schools for an additional week to facilitate efforts such as thorough fumigation. This decision is part of a broader public health campaign to combat the outbreak, which has also seen increased dengue cases in neighboring regions including American Samoa, Cook Islands, French Polynesia, Kiribati, Nauru, Tonga, and Tuvalu.

Health NZ has warned travelers to the Pacific to take precautions, particularly now that dengue cases in Auckland have also escalated to 103 during the first seven months of 2025—double the cases recorded for all of 2024.

The current outbreak is reflected in broader public health challenges across the Pacific Islands, as similar increases in dengue fever cases have been reported in countries like Fiji and Tonga. Efforts to manage the crisis include community engagement, education on mosquito control, and initiatives to reduce breeding sites for the Aedes mosquitoes which spread the virus.

Despite the ongoing difficulties, there is a strong sense of hope within the community as public health authorities are actively mobilizing resources to combat the spread of dengue. Collaborative efforts between communities and health organizations may help contain the outbreak and promote resilience in public health. Moving forward, sustained community engagement and proactive measures are vital in reducing dengue transmission and safeguarding the health of vulnerable populations.
