Polling is taking place today in Tokelau, after a delay caused by severe weather last month that postponed the delivery of ballot boxes. Voters will cast their ballots in Nukunonu, Atafu, Fakaofo, and Apia, where Tokelauans residing in Samoa can also participate.

With over 1,600 residents in the New Zealand territory, the voting age stands at 18. Candidates vying for a seat in the General Fono, Tokelau’s parliament, must meet specific criteria, including being at least 35 years old, holding a valid New Zealand passport, and having lived in Tokelau for at least two years prior to the election.

This year holds special significance as it marks the centennial anniversary of Tokelau becoming a territory of New Zealand, highlighting a century of governance and development. The elections invite citizens to engage in the democratic process, paving the way for future leadership and growth in this unique island community.
