Content creator and farmer Lui Vuibureta is scheduled to enter a plea in the Suva High Court on November 6. During a court appearance before Justice Daniel Goundar, it was brought to light that on August 14, 2025, Vuibureta allegedly made insulting comments about a government minister during a live TikTok session.
Justice Goundar raised concerns regarding the jurisdiction of the High Court in this case, to which the state responded that, according to their interpretation of the Online Safety Act, the High Court holds authority in matters of this nature.
In addition to the primary charges, Vuibureta faces allegations of breaching three bail conditions. These include failing to surrender his passport, neglecting to deactivate his TikTok account, and reoffending while on bail. His legal team pointed out that a psychiatric evaluation conducted by the Magistrates Court had determined he was fit. However, the state revealed that Vuibureta is also under further investigation regarding an additional allegation from the Valelevu Police.
Moreover, the state informed the court that Vuibureta admitted during a caution interview to having posted the controversial videos and expressed remorse for his actions. Vuibureta’s lawyers indicated they received disclosures from the state last week and requested additional time to prepare further information. Consequently, he has been remanded in custody by the Suva High Court.
This case underscores growing concerns regarding online conduct and accountability in the realm of social media, which has become an important topic in contemporary discussions about freedom of expression and public discourse. The communication of ideas through platforms like TikTok highlights the challenges that arise when online remarks lead to legal scrutiny.
