A father of five was overwhelmed with emotion as he celebrated his eldest son’s remarkable achievements at the Fiji National University graduation ceremony. Alipate Moli, who has been the primary provider for his family, was there with his loved ones to honor Sakaraia Qilu, aged 22, who earned both the Outstanding Academic Achievement Graduate award in Nursing and a Certificate of Excellence along with Dean’s Honours.

“This is the proudest moment for any father who has worked tirelessly to ensure that his children succeed,” said Mr. Moli. He shared that, despite his demanding job at a resort that requires him to spend 11 days on the island and only three at home, he stays connected with his children through regular phone calls to check on their studies.

Mr. Qilu’s accomplishments were anticipated, given his outstanding academic record during his schooling years. He secured third place in his class at Saint Peter Chanel School in Korolevu, Nadroga, and was awarded the best Biology student during his Year 12 and Year 13 studies.

“My desire to pursue nursing stems from my love for taking care of people,” Mr. Qilu expressed. He is considering a career as a nurse, public health worker, or teacher.

Looking ahead, he has ambitious plans to enroll in a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery program and ultimately pursue a doctorate. “As the second nurse in my family, I want my siblings to understand the value of education and to aim high instead of falling into negative lifestyles,” he emphasized. He also acknowledged the impact of his mother, who has instilled in him the realities of life that have shaped his path.

Mr. Qilu encourages young people to choose their friends carefully, stating, “Surround yourself with a good circle of friends who can help you progress, and you will achieve your goals.”

This story of achievement not only highlights a family’s dedication to education but also serves as an inspiration to others, showing how resilience and hard work can lead to success. It reminds us that a strong support system is essential, and education remains a powerful tool for a better future.
