Team Fiji is seeking to raise $3.5 million (US$1.75 million) to support its athletes’ participation in the upcoming Pacific Mini Games in Palau, scheduled from June 29 to July 9, 2025. The team plans to compete in 12 of the 14 sports being offered at the event, including archery, athletics, baseball, 3×3 basketball, beach volleyball, indoor women’s volleyball, para-athletics, para-table tennis, triathlon, swimming, va’a, and weightlifting.
Chef de Mission Josaia Tuinamata announced that national federations are finalizing their team selections, following recent tournaments over the Easter weekend. Each athlete faces a levy of $3,000 FJD to participate, encouraging Team Fiji to employ various fundraising strategies. One primary method is a lottery initiative, where tickets are sold for $2 (US$1) each, with ticket books containing 15 tickets available. The team aims to sell 4,500 ticket books to generate necessary funds, closing the lottery on June 2 and holding the draw on June 13.
While some federations are managing to cover the levies, the lottery plays an essential part in filling the financial gaps. Additionally, chartered flights to Palau have been arranged, making the success of this funding crucial for travel logistics.
This initiative isn’t just about securing funds; it represents a united effort among athletes, families, and federations to support Fiji on an international sporting stage. The upcoming Mini Games are not only an opportunity for the athletes to showcase their dedication and talent, but also a chance to foster national pride and community spirit as they prepare to represent their country. The positive engagement from both federations and the community underscores a hopeful outlook for Team Fiji as the event approaches.
