The Ministry of Health is taking steps to address the concerns raised regarding Tavua Hospital by the Fiji Labour Party. Party Leader Mahendra Chaudhry has drawn attention to urgent maintenance needs at the hospital, highlighting the poor condition of the toilets, the limited operational capacity of the mortuary, and the critical shortages of medicines and medical supplies in the dispensary.
In response, the Ministry acknowledged that there is a need for urgent repairs, particularly to the hospital’s ablution facilities, and has begun engaging contractors to tackle these issues within the current financial year. They pointed out that the ongoing dengue outbreak in the Western Division is straining both outpatient and inpatient services at Tavua Hospital and other local hospitals. The Ministry urges the public to be patient as it implements health measures designed to control the mosquito population and alleviate the pressure on health services.
Additionally, while some claims, such as shortages of medicines, are acknowledged by the Ministry as occasional challenges, they are actively working to ensure that medical facilities, including Tavua Hospital, are adequately stocked. The Health Ministry has expressed concern that public comments on these issues could deter individuals from seeking necessary medical care, emphasizing the importance of utilizing local health facilities.
The situation at Tavua Hospital reflects broader challenges within Fiji’s healthcare system, which has also faced scrutiny regarding staffing levels and financial resource allocation. Dr. Basharat Munshi, president of the Fiji Medical Association, recently emphasized the acute shortage of hospital beds and the high costs associated with enhancing medical infrastructure in Fiji, highlighting the need for a substantial investment of approximately $4.6 billion to better accommodate the growing population.
This ongoing discussion points to a critical juncture for Fiji’s healthcare system, where the acknowledgment of existing problems alongside public and governmental dialogue creates an opportunity for reform and improvement. With combined efforts from the Ministry of Health and raised public awareness, there is hope for a more resilient healthcare framework to meet the needs of the Fijian population.
