Immediate traffic management strategies are being implemented to tackle the daily congestion along the Suva–Nausori corridor, as the Government also explores sustainable, long-term infrastructure enhancements, according to Transport Minister Ro Filipe Tuisawau.

Minister Tuisawau revealed that a collaborative committee, consisting of key enforcement and infrastructure agencies, has been charged with developing practical measures to alleviate the peak-hour gridlock experienced by thousands of commuters. He emphasized that congestion is particularly intense during school terms, notably between 6 a.m. and 8 a.m., when the traffic is heavily impacted by school drop-offs, work commutes, and public transport halting along narrow roadways.

To address these issues, the government plans to establish designated bus bays to prevent vehicles from obstructing traffic lanes, a solution the Minister believes can be quickly implemented. He mentioned that buses currently stopping on the road contribute significantly to congestion, and setting up proper bus stops is essential for an efficient traffic flow.

In addition to immediate measures, the Government is considering staggered start times to help distribute traffic demand more evenly throughout the morning rush. Some civil service employees may have the option to start their day at different times, and discussions regarding flexible school hours are underway.

For longer-term solutions, authorities are evaluating significant infrastructure initiatives, including a proposed ferry service between Nausori and Suva. However, this would necessitate the development of new jetty facilities and additional infrastructure to support its launch. Furthermore, feasibility studies are being conducted on road upgrades, which would involve widening key segments and improving feeder routes, thereby providing alternative access and alleviating the strain on the main corridor.

These efforts reflect a commitment to implementing practical, short-term measures while working on comprehensive long-term solutions to enhance transportation efficiency and ease congestion for all commuters.
