Suva Grammar’s Rugby Team Eyes Deans Trophy After Triumph Over Labasa

Suva Grammar School’s Under-18 rugby team celebrated a convincing victory over Labasa College, winning 33-17 in a friendly match held on Monday. This match was part of their preparations as they aim for success in the upcoming Deans Trophy.

Iosefa Masivue, the principal of Suva Grammar School, expressed his pride in the team and acknowledged the competitive spirit exhibited by Labasa College. “Labasa College provided a strong challenge, and it was rewarding to see such talent on the field,” he remarked. Masivue, a former student of the school himself, noted his honor in bringing Suva Grammar back to his roots for this friendly match.

Beyond the athletic competition, the match was designed to offer students a rich experience outside their usual surroundings, particularly to immerse them in rural Fiji’s vibrant culture. Masivue highlighted the mutual learning experience intended for both teams, saying, “We hoped it would be beneficial for both sides.”

This friendly match also coincides with Suva Grammar School’s 65th Jubilee celebrations, marking a significant milestone for the institution. The school has organized multiple events to commemorate this occasion, particularly with another squad, the Under-16 team, set to tour New Zealand soon.

With their convincing win, Suva Grammar is building momentum as they prepare to contend for the prestigious Deans title this year, looking to add to their recent successes that include winning both the under-15 and under-16 Vodafone Super Deans titles. The school community remains optimistic about their rugby teams, fostering a supportive environment as they strive for further achievements in the sport.
