The Suva City Council is set to implement strategic measures aimed at increasing the number of waste bins throughout the city in response to a concerning rise in illegal waste disposal. Acting Chief Executive Tevita Boseiwaqa highlighted the council’s ongoing collaboration with key stakeholders to devise innovative, long-term solutions to the city’s escalating waste management challenges and to uphold urban cleanliness.
Boseiwaqa expressed the urgency of addressing this issue, warning that without prompt action, the waste problem could severely harm the environment. “The quality of the environment and the quality of our lives,” he stated. He also noted the troubling trend of individuals transporting waste from one community to another, undermining collective efforts to maintain cleanliness.
To enhance waste management, Boseiwaqa urged the public to adhere to the rubbish collection schedules which are regularly advertised. He emphasized the importance of compliance, noting, “All we have to do is, we just follow that. And bring out your rubbish during the day of collection.”
Minister for Local Government Maciu Nalumisa echoed the sentiment that effective waste management requires a united community effort. He stressed the importance of civic pride in maintaining a clean environment, encouraging residents to pick up litter they encounter and properly dispose of it in designated bins.
As the Suva City Council actively works to enhance urban waste services, it is essential for residents to take initiative and practice responsible waste management at home. By fostering a culture of accountability and cooperation, the community can effectively address these pressing environmental challenges.
