Solomon Islands Mourns the Loss of a Political Icon

Former Prime Minister of the Solomon Islands, Sir Francis Billy Hilly, has died at the age of 76. His daughter confirmed the news through a social media post, stating that he passed away last night at the National Referral Hospital in Honiara. This loss comes just days after the passing of another respected politician, former Governor-General Sir Reverend David Vunagi, indicating a poignant moment for the nation as it mourns the loss of its senior statesmen.

Sir Francis was born on July 20, 1948, in Emu Harbour, located on Ranongga Island in the Western Province. His educational journey began at the Government Primary School in Honiara, followed by King George VI School, culminating in a Bachelor of Arts in Administration from the University of the South Pacific in 1973, marking him as the institution’s first graduate.

His political career took off in 1976 when he became the Member of Parliament for Ranongga/Simbo, subsequently serving as Minister for Home Affairs. He later resigned in 1978 in solidarity with the Western Breakaway Movement. Sir Francis held several significant positions throughout his career, including Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Health and Medical Services. He served as Prime Minister from June 1993 to November 1994, and he remained an active participant in governmental affairs until 2007.

In recognition of his contributions, Sir Francis was knighted in 2012, highlighting his dedication to public service. He also served as the Chairman of the Solomon Islands Political Parties Commission until he had to resign due to health issues.
