A businessman in Labasa has voiced concerns that the upcoming closure of the Labasa airport could have dire repercussions for local enterprises, potentially resulting in losses worth millions. Satish Kumar expressed his apprehension regarding the six-week closure planned from February 16 to March 27, indicating that it could disrupt trade, travel, and the overall economic stability of the town.
“This is the only airport serving Labasa. People will have to spend hundreds of extra dollars to fly from Savusavu,” Mr. Kumar highlighted. He underscored the fact that small businesses heavily depend on timely deliveries, and the airport closure could severely hinder their operations. “Small businesses that rely on timely deliveries could face major losses, and tourism and transport sectors will also suffer.”
He emphasized the necessity for a broader consultation process prior to the airport’s closure, advocating for the development of proper alternative plans. Without immediate action, he warned that the economic consequences could be quite severe. Moreover, he pointed out that the community would face increased inconvenience and travel expenses during this period.
“The local economy is at risk. People’s livelihoods depend on timely access to transport and trade. Immediate action is needed to reduce the impact,” he stated.
The closure had been communicated to government officials, as well as representatives from the Labasa Chambers of Commerce and Labasa Town Council, during a meeting last year that included two representatives from Fiji Airports at the Commissioner’s Northern Office.
Fiji Airports’ chief executive officer, Mesake Nawari, remarked that the closure is part of a vital investment in aviation safety and infrastructure resilience for the Northern Division. He acknowledged that while the temporary shutdown may cause short-term inconvenience, it is essential for ensuring the long-term safety, reliability, and sustainability of aircraft operations at Labasa. Importantly, he clarified that the project does not involve extending the runway, with the closure aimed at facilitating major excavation, stabilization, and drainage installation within the active runway area, making it impractical to maintain aircraft operations during that time.
Though the situation presents challenges, it also reflects ongoing efforts to enhance the safety and infrastructure of the region, offering a glimpse of potential improvements in the future.
