A man has been charged by authorities in Rakiraki after he allegedly sexually assaulted a five-year-old girl in a village in Ra. The incident occurred last week when the man lured the child under the guise of picking mangoes from a nearby tree. Fortunately, the girl’s brother witnessed the assault and promptly raised an alarm.

Following this, the child’s mother reported the incident to the police, leading to the swift arrest of the suspect. The 44-year-old man appeared in the Tavua Magistrates Court yesterday, where he has been remanded in custody until January 2, 2025, as the case progresses.

This incident highlights the critical role of vigilance and community awareness in protecting vulnerable individuals, particularly children. It serves as a poignant reminder for parents and guardians to remain vigilant and to encourage children to speak up if they ever find themselves in uncomfortable or dangerous situations.

The community’s proactive response is encouraging, and it demonstrates a commitment to safeguarding the well-being of children, which is essential in fostering a safer environment for all.
