The Fiji Women’s Crisis Centre has stated that domestic violence significantly impacts women’s aspirations and self-worth. Coordinator Shamima Ali highlighted that the lasting effects of abuse often leave women feeling powerless and lacking confidence. Many women lose the drive to pursue their careers, education, and social opportunities due to the controlling tendencies of their abusers.

Ali emphasized the need for safe spaces, comprehensive counseling, and empowerment programs. These resources should specifically address both emotional and economic barriers that keep women trapped in abusive situations. Minister for Women, Children, and Social Protection Sashi Kiran echoed these concerns, stressing the complexity surrounding the issue. Many educated women remain silent, hoping their partners will change, unaware that they may be trapped in a cycle of abuse.

Kiran pointed out that women must understand that no form of violence is acceptable. In cases where children are involved, the implications of staying in such relationships can be dire. The minister urged women to advocate for themselves and seek help, whether that means encouraging their partners to pursue counseling or removing themselves from harmful environments.

Similar past discussions have shed light on the myriad factors that compel women to remain in abusive relationships, such as financial dependency, societal pressures regarding family structures, and deeply ingrained cultural beliefs. Many women feel compelled to endure violence in an effort to maintain a semblance of stability for their children, fearing societal judgment for leaving.

Ali’s insights illustrate that the road to empowerment and safety for women requires a concerted societal effort to break down the barriers causing such silence and suffering. There is a hopeful path forward, as both the community and leaders like Kiran work together to foster a culture that prioritizes respect, safety, and empathy, ultimately paving the way for healthier families and relationships in Fiji.
