Koli Sewabu, a former representative of Fiji’s national rugby team and a director of the Fiji Rugby Union, has expressed his ambition to step into a significant executive role within the organization. His comments were made at the Leaders LEAD Symposium 2025, held at the Sofitel Resort in Denarau, where he reflected on his career and future goals.
After stepping down from his position in Sports Diplomacy with Rugby Australia and Oceania Rugby in February last year, Sewabu founded his own sports consultancy, Backrow Management, based in Sydney. Over the past year, he has been focused on establishing himself in the consultancy field, while also seeking ways to contribute to Fiji Rugby.
Sewabu mentioned that he has been shortlisted several times for a major role within the Fiji Rugby Union over the last four to five years. He remains hopeful that this time may be different, fueled by a positive shift in his personal outlook. “Everything seems to align, and I know something bigger is coming,” he remarked, suggesting a renewed motivation as he looks toward his future.
His recent efforts include discussions with World Rugby and the Australian Government about potential funding aimed at boosting Fiji Rugby’s global stature. This initiative aligns with the broader changes happening within the FRU, which recently elected a new board during a successful Annual General Meeting. This new leadership bodes well for the organization, as it seeks to build on the financial recovery and operational improvements made by the previous board.
Sewabu emphasized the necessity of recruiting skilled individuals to drive positive changes in the rugby landscape, particularly in light of previous negative portrayals of Fijian rugby in the media. This aligns with the FRU’s commitment to building a lasting legacy for future generations and fostering a strong communal spirit among stakeholders.
As Fiji Rugby navigates this transformative phase, there is a sense of renewed hope and potential for the sport’s future. With effective leadership and a commitment to development, the possibilities for success appear promising, potentially leading to an even brighter future for rugby in Fiji.
