The Flying Fijians may have the opportunity to face Scotland in a Test match during the July Test matches next year. This possibility was brought to light by Scotland’s head coach Gregor Townsend, who mentioned in an interview that the Scotland rugby team is planning a summer tour of the South Seas for 2025, which is expected to include at least one Test match in Fiji.
Scotland recently enjoyed a commanding 57-17 victory over the Fijians during the Autumn Nations Test Series at Murrayfield, a performance they followed up with another win against Australia. However, a Test match in Fiji would mark their first encounter on Fijian soil since 2017.
Townsend stated, “The summer tour that we are organising is to go to the South Seas,” indicating that Fiji is a key part of their plans, along with the possibility of another match be it in New Zealand or other islands in the region. He expressed the intention to expand their tour to potentially include three or four games, allowing more players the chance to participate.
Historically, the Flying Fijians have had some success against Scotland, having recorded their first Test win over them in 1998 with a score of 51-26 and followed that up with a narrow 27-22 victory in 2017, both games taking place in Suva.
Furthermore, the suggested match against Scotland could follow the Flying Fijians’ warm-up Test against the Wallabies at the McDonald Jones Stadium in Newcastle, Australia, on July 6, 2025. This match is set to happen three weeks before the Wallabies face the British & Irish Lions.
When asked about the possibility of playing against the All Blacks, Townsend mentioned that a midweek match might be scheduled instead, but did not reveal further details.
With Townsend focusing on the upcoming Six Nations tournament and the challenges awaiting Scotland, he acknowledged the strength of the Flying Fijians, who are currently ranked among the top eight teams in the world.
This proposed match continues to reflect a growing interest in international rugby fixtures and highlights the competitive spirit present in the sport as teams like Scotland and Fiji strengthen their ties and engage in thrilling encounters.
This anticipated Test is sure to energize rugby fans, hinting at an exciting 2025 for both teams as they prepare to showcase their talent on the international stage. The meeting of Scotland and Fiji represents not just a match but a celebration of rugby’s global community.
