Schools in the Lau Group will remain closed until further notice due to the significant damage caused by Tropical Cyclone Rae, according to Education Minister Aseri Radrodro. This decision was made in consultation with the National Disaster Management Office, highlighting the ongoing challenges that the cyclone has posed to infrastructure, including roads and bridges, which has hindered access for students and educators.

Several schools in the affected areas are also being utilized as evacuation centers, which prevents them from operating normally. In contrast, schools across the Northern Division, Lomaiviti, Western, Central Divisions, and Rotuma are set to resume as scheduled. However, parents are advised to evaluate the safety of sending their children to school, especially in regions prone to flooding or other hazards.

Minister Radrodro has emphasized the importance of school leaders maintaining close communication with their Management Committees and local authorities to stay informed about any updates related to the situation. The Ministry of Education is actively monitoring the weather conditions and will provide additional information as necessary, reaffirming that the safety and well-being of all students is the utmost priority.

This proactive approach to ensuring student safety reflects the Ministry’s long-standing commitment to handle severe weather situations, consistent with past actions taken during similar events. As communities unite to navigate these challenges, there remains hope that cooperation and vigilance will enable families to overcome this difficult period together, paving the way for a prompt return to normalcy in education once conditions improve.
