Saint Thomas Primary School is gearing up to make a splash at the Fiji Primary and Secondary Schools National Swimming Championships this Friday, with a team of 17 swimmers—eight females and nine males—ready to compete. This annual event promises not only the chance to win medals but also valuable exposure for the young athletes.

Contingent manager Synthia Prasad emphasized the significance of the experience for the students, stating, “Our message here is that we all keep trying our best and we remain humble in whatever we do.” She highlighted that the team is more focused on dedication, commitment, and patience rather than the pursuit of medals.

Preparation for the championships has been extensive, with training commencing two weeks prior to Easter and continuing through the school holidays. Prasad shared that balancing training with academic responsibilities and other sports commitments presented challenges, particularly since the school has a strong focus on holistic education, including religious commitments.

Despite these obstacles, many students have shown a keen interest in competitive swimming. The support from parents has been invaluable, providing encouragement and a structured timetable for activities. Prasad expressed gratitude for the team’s supportive environment, citing the entire Saint Thomas Primary School community—including current parents, guardians, and alumni—as vital in facilitating the students’ preparations.

The team is eagerly anticipating their departure from Lautoka to Suva at 7 AM tomorrow, with the championships concluding on Saturday at the National Aquatic Centre. The enthusiasm surrounding their participation reflects a shared hope for success and personal growth, showcasing the rewards of hard work and commitment in youth sports.

As the swimming competition approaches, the spirit of teamwork and community support shines brightly, offering the young athletes a chance to not only compete but to grow and inspire others in their pursuit of excellence.
