Michella’e Stolz, an 18-year-old utility backline player from Naselesele in Taveuni, is on the verge of fulfilling her long-held dream as she prepares to represent Fiji in the upcoming 2025 Oceania Rugby Women’s Championship, starting next Friday at Lawaqa Park. The Vodafone Fijiana XV will kick off their campaign against Tonga, and Stolz expresses that this opportunity is a cherished realization.

“I’ve been playing rugby since I was 11. I started with the boys in the under-13s and fell in love with the sport,” Stolz reflected. Her journey has been marked by unwavering passion and perseverance. Moving to New Zealand, she played for the NZ Fijians in the Global Youth Sevens, where she was scouted, paving her way to the Fijiana squad.

Stolz admires the achievements of the senior players, who have shown her warmth and camaraderie during her transition into the team. “They’ve really looked after us and know the importance of being good role models,” she stated, expressing gratitude for their support.

Describing her routine, Stolz emphasizes discipline and faith. She prepares her gear the night before, starts her day with breakfast and Bible study, and arrives early for training to center herself and connect with her faith. While still finding her footing within the team, she believes that fostering unity is essential for their success.

“We just need more connection. This camp will help us bond as a team,” she explained as they gear up to face Tonga. Stolz’s story is a testament to the power of hard work, faith, and dedication, showcasing that dreams can indeed come true.

This emerging narrative of young athletes stepping into the spotlight is not unique to Stolz. Similar stories of hope and ambition are evident, such as with Krystelle Thaggard, another young Fijian player who aspires to wear the national jersey and inspire future generations. The collective spirit and determination among these young athletes symbolize a bright future for women’s rugby in Fiji, resonating with their aspirations to elevate the sport on an international level.

As the Fijiana XV prepares for its matches, Stolz and her teammates embody the promise of success in women’s rugby, highlighting a vibrant future for sports in Fiji supported by a new generation of dedicated athletes.
