The highly anticipated Fiji Bitter Nahehevia 7s competition wrapped up with an impressive display of talent over two exhilarating days at Lawaqa Park in Sigatoka. Tournament organizer Marika Kurisese expressed her satisfaction with the event’s success, highlighting the significant talent on display throughout the competition.
“The competition went well, and we witnessed a lot of raw talent over the two days,” Kurisese stated. This tournament served as an essential platform for grassroots clubs within Nadroga, underscoring the region’s deep connection and passion for rugby. “It was a great competition for grassroots clubs here in Nadroga, and we saw in the matches that they really have rugby in their blood,” she added.
The matches showcased exceptional skills and commitment from the participating clubs, proving that local talent continues to thrive. Kurisese noted that events like this allow clubs to demonstrate their skills and establish their presence in the rugby community.
The competition featured several surprising upsets, including the early exit of the tournament favorites, Viti Roofing Devo Babas, who had dominated previous tournaments in Vanualevu. “The competition was stiff and full of surprises,” Kurisese remarked about the unexpected outcomes witnessed in the matches.
Managing participation from 52 teams over the two-day event was no small feat, but the organizers succeeded in ensuring a smooth execution. While attendance on the first day was lower due to work and school commitments, the final day saw a bustling crowd, filled with enthusiastic fans who created a vibrant atmosphere with their unwavering support.
Recognition was given to the sponsors, particularly Fiji Bitter, for their contributions to the tournament’s success. In the finals, Aflame Brothers triumphed over Village Boys with a score of 14-5 in the under-21 match, while Aflame Sisters also secured victory against Lilian Amazon, winning their women’s final 14-5.
Overall, the Fiji Bitter Nahehevia 7s competition not only showcased the spirit of rugby but also reinforced the strong community ties in Nadroga, providing hope for the sport’s future development in the region.
