Rauto Vakadranu, a member of the Fiji Airways Fijian men’s rugby squad, has emphasized the importance of adhering to the law during the festive season. The 27-year-old corrections officer recognizes that the holiday season can bring about numerous temptations and challenges.
Having participated in the Vancouver and Los Angeles legs of the SVNS series this year, Vakadranu is now focused on making a comeback to the main team. He also contributed to the national team during the recent Mataso 7s tournament.
“My goal for 2025 is to play in another leg,” said Vakadranu, who is keenly aware of the competitive nature of the squad. He expressed, “It’s quite tough to secure your spot with the number of talented players in the squad.” Despite being the only representative from his club, the Wardens, in the extended squad, he is grateful for the team’s influence on his performance.
Reflecting on his journey, he mentioned how watching Wardens players, including Josua Vakurinabili during his high school days, inspired him to excel, stating, “It’s just a different feeling to play with him in the same team.” He credited Wardens rugby with helping elevate his game and aiding his return to the national squad after a previous setback.
Vakadranu shared insights on setting goals, reminding fellow players about the risks of straying from their objectives during this season. “As rugby players, we are old enough to know what is wrong and right, so do what you know is best for you and the country,” he advised.
The Fiji 7s squad is currently on break for Christmas and New Year, with plans to resume training in January. They are also set to compete in the McDonald’s Coral Coast 7s from January 16-18 at Lawaqa Park in Sigatoka.
This message from Vakadranu is a timely reminder for athletes, particularly during the holiday season, about the responsibilities that come with their profession. It highlights the necessity of discipline and focus, fostering a sense of accountability not only towards themselves but also towards their teammates and supporters. As they prepare for the challenges ahead in 2025, maintaining a positive outlook and dedication to their sport will undoubtedly serve them well.
