Following the initial round of the 2025 Fiji Secondary Schools Rugby League (FSSRL) zone competitions, Wise Kativerata, the head coach of the Fiji Bati, expressed his satisfaction with the development of young players and their grasp of rugby league fundamentals. Unlike previous seasons, where players often leaned towards a union-style approach, Kativerata noticed a commendable shift toward effective league strategies observed during the FSSRL Eastern Zone games.

He credited this positive transformation to the FSSRL’s ongoing efforts in conducting coaching clinics nationwide, which have significantly enhanced players’ understanding of the game. Notably, he remarked on improvements in executing the six-tackle rule, defensive responsibilities, and overall game organization. “The most improvement in the games that I saw is that they complete their six tackles. They understand now they have to hold the ball six times. And the defense, they’re more organized,” Kativerata stated, indicating a marked enhancement compared to past performances.

In a forward-looking initiative, Kativerata announced the establishment of development academies targeting players aged 14 to 17 after the conclusion of the FSSRL competition in the western, central, and northern regions. This initiative aims to cultivate emerging talents and emphasizes the importance of grassroots development, which can open doors to professional rugby opportunities in the future.

The next phases of the zone competitions are anticipated to further solidify the progress made thus far, promoting skill enhancement within the sport. Kativerata’s hopeful perspective and dedication to nurturing young talent signify a promising future for rugby league in Fiji, fostering accessibility and respect for the sport among the youth.

This positive trajectory not only illustrates the advances in player development but also reflects an increasing enthusiasm for rugby league, ensuring that coming generations will have the chance to excel and thrive in the game.
