The Land Transport Authority (LTA) of Fiji, along with the Accident Compensation Commission Fiji (ACCF), has joined forces with the Fiji Rugby Union (FRU) to tackle the issue of road accidents and fatalities in the nation. This collaboration is designed to enhance road safety compliance and encourage adherence to traffic regulations among the Fijian populace, leveraging the star power of rugby players and the extensive reach of the FRU.

LTA Chief Executive Irimaia Rokosawa emphasized the importance of this initiative, noting that sports, particularly rugby, play a significant role in shaping societal attitudes and behaviors in Fiji. He highlighted that rugby players, who are highly regarded figures in the country, are ideally positioned to advocate for responsible road use.

The partnership between LTA, ACCF, and FRU aims to foster a culture of road safety awareness and responsibility within communities over the next four years. Rokosawa stated, “Rugby is a unifying force in Fiji, and the influence of players extends far beyond the field. Through this partnership with FRU, we are sending a clear message that road safety is a collective responsibility.”

Avnil Pratap, General Manager of Commercial, Broadcast & Marketing at the Fiji Rugby Union, echoed this sentiment, stating that the FRU is dedicated to the well-being of Fijians, both on and off the field. He expressed hope that the initiative would inspire positive behavior and encourage the community to prioritize safety while traveling on the roads.

This partnership presents a promising opportunity to leverage the passion for rugby in Fiji as a means to promote essential life-saving messages. By using admired athletes to advocate for road safety, the initiative has the potential to significantly influence public awareness and foster safer driving behaviors in the country.

In summary, the collaboration between the LTA, ACCF, and FRU aims to significantly improve road safety in Fiji by utilizing the popularity of rugby to encourage responsible behavior among road users. With the commitment from both the authority and rugby union, the initiative holds the potential to create a lasting positive impact on the community.
