Road to Progress: Matuku Island’s Lifeline Transforms Communities

Matuku Island in Lau is experiencing a transformative moment as the construction of a new 22.2-kilometre road approaches completion. This $317,000 initiative, led by the Ministry of Public Works, aims to connect seven villages that have traditionally depended on boats for daily transportation.

District representative Ilaitia Cama Tuinaceva expressed that this new road signifies the dawn of a new era for the island, enhancing access to essential services and bridging communities. The road’s construction is being completed in three phases, with the initial two well underway.

The villages of Yaroi, Natokalau, Qalikarua, Levukaidaku, Makadru, Raviravi, and Lomaji will soon benefit from direct land access, facilitating smoother daily movement and improved service delivery. This development addresses previous challenges faced by residents due to isolation, paving the way for more opportunities in terms of growth, transportation, and enhanced living conditions.

Tuinaceva, representing the Matuku Chiefs and villagers, extended gratitude to the government for turning a crucial infrastructure dream into reality. The completion of the road is expected to bring positive changes for the community, marking a significant step towards ending the longstanding isolation of Matuku Island.

This project aligns with ongoing infrastructural improvements in Fiji, reminiscent of recent developments such as the new access road inaugurated for the Wailailai Melanesian community on Ovalau.
