Rising Road Woes: Fiji’s Safety Warning Ahead of School Start

Thirteen serious road accidents have been reported in Fiji this year, raising significant concerns about road safety, especially as the new school year approaches. Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Mitilei Divuana, the Director of Traffic and Transport Control, emphasized the importance of prioritizing safety on the roads during this busy time.

The worrying trend is highlighted by the fact that 11 of these accidents resulted from drivers losing control of their vehicles, primarily due to speeding and fatigue. SSP Divuana urged drivers to plan their trips effectively, take breaks during long journeys, and avoid rushing, stressing that “safety must be your top concern.”

Encouragingly, the Fiji Police Force has reported no fatalities from these accidents so far this year, a stark contrast to the two fatalities recorded during the same period last year. This improvement suggests that ongoing road safety campaigns and increased awareness among drivers are beginning to take effect.

To support road safety efforts, police traffic officers will maintain a visible presence on the roads, conducting checks and educating drivers about safe driving practices. Additionally, drivers are encouraged to stop at Community Posts along highways for rest breaks, which can play a crucial role in preventing accidents.

As the community prepares for the school season, it is vital for all road users to cultivate responsible driving habits. With collective efforts from the police and the public, there is hope that Fiji can continue to reduce the number of serious accidents and maintain this positive trend in road safety.

In summary, while the total number of serious accidents is alarming, the absence of fatalities offers a hopeful outlook. Continued dedication to road safety by both authorities and the community can lead to ongoing improvements and a safer driving environment for everyone on Fiji’s roads.
