UNAIDS Pacific adviser Renata Ram has raised concerns about the rising rates of HIV/AIDS in Fiji, attributing this increase to stigma and a lack of knowledge surrounding the disease. In a recent interview, she highlighted that the younger generation lacks essential understanding about HIV/AIDS, which fuels misconceptions and stigma.

Ms. Ram discussed how misinformation proliferates online, leading to confusion about transmission modes, like whether kissing someone can spread the virus. She emphasized the pressing need for better educational programs in schools and community outreach to improve the understanding of HIV/AIDS.

The statistics paint a concerning picture: the Ministry of Health and Medical Services (MOHMS) reported 552 new HIV cases in the first half of 2024 alone. This surge may be partly due to increased testing and screening, particularly among key populations. Ms. Ram stressed that while the rise in testing is a positive indicator of heightened awareness, it also underscores the necessity for comprehensive sexual health education and targeted prevention strategies.

Furthermore, barriers like stigma and economic hardships—exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic—have worsened vulnerabilities among marginalized communities. Ms. Ram highlighted the importance of developing a comprehensive strategy to combat these challenges, including the upcoming HIV Surge Strategy from the MOHMS, which aims to enhance access to critical services like condom distribution and pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP).

This holistic approach signals hope as it not only aims to address the immediate healthcare needs but also fosters an environment that encourages informed discussions about sexual health, ultimately working towards reducing the stigma surrounding HIV and improving outcomes for those affected. The collective effort among health authorities and the community could turn the tide against the epidemic and lead to healthier futures for all Fijians.
