Fiji’s Commissioner of Police, Rusiate Tudravu, has recently highlighted the need to restore public trust in the Fiji Police Force while addressing a group of sergeants completing their qualifying course at the Fiji Police Academy. Tudravu emphasized that the officers play a crucial role in changing public perception and building confidence in law enforcement.

During the ceremony, Tudravu urged the 283 participants, who completed a 13-week distance learning course spanning five policing divisions, to take on leadership roles in enforcing discipline and standards within the force. He stated, “You can only deliver what you possess, so if you don’t know your work, you cannot expect to lead those under your command.”

His message resonated with previous extensive efforts to tackle the issues of trust and accountability within the organization, as noted in earlier articles that indicated his commitment to internal reforms and community engagement. Tudravu reiterated that change is necessary and achievable, calling on the officers to unite in their mission to improve service delivery and address the historical concerns that have led to diminished public confidence.

This approach aligns with the ongoing Fiji Police Uplift Program, aimed at enhancing accountability, operational capabilities, and community relations. The program is built on seven core pillars, promoting leadership and integrity among officers while addressing misconduct and fostering a culture of ethical policing.

Furthermore, Tudravu’s leadership is characterized by a focus on transparency, as he has consistently stressed the importance of fair investigations and accountability in addressing misconduct within the force. By actively engaging with officers and encouraging open communication, there is hope for a more united and effective police service that prioritizes community welfare.

Fiji stands at a pivotal moment with the police force’s commitment to internal reform, which holds potential for significant improvements in police-community relations. As the Fiji Police Force continues its journey toward restoring public trust, the dedication of its officers to this vision is crucial for fostering a safer and more cooperative environment for all citizens.
