Bus transportation plays a crucial role in Suva, as highlighted in a recent peer review which found that nearly half (46 percent) of all transport in the city is facilitated by public buses. This indicates that buses are an essential and frequently used mode of transport for many residents, underscoring the presence of a relatively robust public transport system that fosters economic development by offering affordable and accessible transportation options.

In addition to buses, Suva has a significant number of taxis, with around 7,000 registered vehicles. This extensive taxi fleet supplements public transportation, providing vital door-to-door service for those who require flexible travel options. Such a blend of transport modes indicates a diverse transportation infrastructure that meets various commuter needs.

However, the report underscores challenges related to parking and urban traffic management. Suva has only 628 metered parking spaces, with occupancy rates reaching 80 percent. This high demand suggests potential congestion issues in urban areas, which calls for improved urban planning, including the promotion of public transport or cycling.

The Greater Suva Transportation Strategy (2015-2030) highlights the need for enhancements in public transport and outlines specific improvements necessary to accommodate the city’s growing population, such as dedicated bus lanes and upgraded bus terminals. The report also emphasizes the necessity for better pedestrian infrastructure, asserting the need for safe crossings, proper footpaths, and bicycle lanes to support a healthier and more active city.

On the technological side, the implementation of intelligent traffic management systems is encouraged to help optimize traffic flow and decrease congestion. These innovations could be essential in creating a more sustainable transport ecosystem in Suva that caters to the evolving needs of its residents.

While current traffic levels and parking demands present significant challenges, the ongoing focus on improving transportation infrastructure and public transport systems offers hope for a more efficient, accessible, and environmentally sustainable urban transport network in Suva. The commitment from local authorities to embrace innovative solutions and community feedback indicates a promising direction towards addressing and resolving these urban mobility issues.
