Ongoing improvements at the Suva Bus Station have become a topic of discussion following concerns about potholes and the poor condition of the surrounding roads. Commuters and bus operators have expressed their frustrations, prompting local officials and the Fiji Roads Authority (FRA) to clarify their plans and progress in addressing these issues.

Tevita Boseiwaqa, chairperson of the Suva City Council special administrator, revealed that repair efforts began in mid-December 2024. Initially estimated at $1 million, the cost of the ongoing repairs is now projected to be around $800,000. Mr. Boseiwaqa highlighted that the entrance to the bus station has been a focal point of community complaints.

“We are not going to sit around and wait,” he asserted, mentioning that both the pothole issues and the condition of the bus station entrance are longstanding problems that are being actively addressed in collaboration with the FRA. Currently, much of the work involves clearing the underground drainage systems, which have been compromised by years of blocked drains and damaged culverts.

In the past month, FRA teams have focused on clearing these drainage systems, with repairs nearing completion. Mr. Boseiwaqa expressed optimism, stating, “We expect this work to take about a month to complete, weather permitting,” and highlighted that resurfacing will significantly enhance road conditions.

Despite the progress, a recent social media post featuring outdated images of the bus station’s previous state has led to confusion among the public, with some believing that no improvements had occurred. The SCC and FRA have emphasized that their repairs have been actively ongoing since December, and they are committed to transparency about their efforts through appropriate media channels.

In conclusion, the ongoing upgrades at the Suva Bus Station reflect a committed response to longstanding infrastructure issues, showcasing the local government’s dedication to improving public transport conditions. This proactive approach not only addresses immediate concerns but also aims to foster a more reliable and efficient transportation system for the community.
