Initial evaluations indicate that Tropical Cyclone Rae has not inflicted significant damage on Vanua Levu, according to Commissioner Northern Uraia Rainima during a media briefing held post-cyclone. While serious impacts have been avoided, the Northern division did experience heavy rainfall that resulted in localized flooding.

In particular, Rainima highlighted that agriculture officials are currently assessing the effects of the cyclone on crops and farms, given the windy conditions and flooding that have affected the area. The Fiji Roads Authority is also conducting inspections on bridges and has begun repairing affected roads, alongside ongoing drainage work in impacted regions.

“It’s important that infrastructure assessments are carried out quickly,” Rainima noted. “We aim to submit a report to the National Disaster Management Office (NDMO) by Friday, and repairs have already commenced in some areas.”

Of note is the community resilience that has emerged during this challenging time. Enhanced drainage systems previously implemented in many areas have proven effective in minimizing flooding, especially in Labasa. The collaborative efforts between local authorities and residents—such as moving vulnerable goods and preparing for adverse weather—demonstrate a strong commitment to safety and recovery.

Despite the potential challenges caused by flooding in certain areas, authorities continue to monitor situations closely and encourage residents to remain vigilant. This proactive approach to disaster preparedness and response showcases the community’s solidarity and resolve during these unpredictable weather events.

Overall, the situation illustrates the critical importance of community resilience and effective infrastructure in mitigating the impacts of natural disasters, instilling hope for a swift return to normalcy as regions recover from the recent cyclone.
