A striking 10-carat blue diamond, expected to command a price of around $20 million, was officially revealed during an auction presentation by Sotheby’s in Geneva. Known as the “Mediterranean Blue Diamond,” this cushion-shaped gem, which originates from South Africa, possesses a rare fancy vivid blue hue, classification Sotheby’s highlighted.
Jessica Wyndham from Sotheby’s noted the growing demand for colored diamonds, expressing optimism about the diamond’s auction potential. “The market for colored diamonds continues to go from strength to strength,” she stated.
This auction draws attention, particularly as colored diamonds have previously achieved remarkable prices, such as a vivid blue diamond that sold for 56.8 million Swiss francs (approximately $68.7 million) at a Christie’s event in Geneva back in 2016. Sotheby’s is set to conduct the live auction on May 13 at the Mandarin Oriental Hotel, which promises to be a key event for collectors and enthusiasts alike.
The auction, part of a larger high jewelry collection, highlights not just the allure of rare gemstones but also aligns with a notable trend in the luxury market focusing on unique and vivid colors in diamonds.
This moment reflects a broader appreciation for the intricate beauty of colored diamonds and generates excitement among collectors and investors looking for standout pieces. As the auction approaches, there is anticipation that it could set new records in the colored diamond segment, echoing the success of previous high-value gemstone sales.
