Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka convened a meeting yesterday with senior police officials as he continues to acclimate to his responsibilities as the Minister Responsible for Police and Immigration. The session included key figures such as Acting Commissioner of Police Juki Fong Chew and Deputy Police Commissioner Sakeo Raikaci, alongside three other senior officers.
During this briefing, the Prime Minister aimed to gain insights into the current operational and management dynamics within the Fiji Police Force. In a conversation with The Fiji Times, he noted, “It was my ‘familiarisation briefing’ from the Acting Commissioner and his Senior Management/Command team, similar to the one I will have with the Acting Director of Immigration and Senior Staff today.”
He also highlighted that he had a prior briefing with the Divisional Police Commander for the Western Division earlier in the week. The meeting was attended by Minister for Home Affairs Pio Tikoduadua, along with Mason Smith and Dr. Raijieli Taga, who are both permanent secretaries working with the Prime Minister’s Office.
This proactive approach by Prime Minister Rabuka demonstrates a commitment to understanding the law enforcement landscape in Fiji, which may lead to more efficient policing and immigration processes. By engaging directly with top police officials and gaining firsthand insights, the Prime Minister is laying the groundwork for informed decision-making that could benefit the community.
Overall, the Prime Minister’s engagement with the police demonstrates a hopeful trend towards improved governance and accountability in Fiji’s law enforcement. This initiative may foster stronger collaboration between the government and the police, ultimately enhancing public safety and operational effectiveness.
