Waqasaqa Votuwale expressed immense pride and happiness as his daughter, Maraia Vuniwaqa, received the prestigious title of dux at Valebasoga Secondary School in Labasa. The ambitious 18-year-old achieved this honor during the school’s recent prizegiving ceremony, where she scored an impressive 405 out of a possible 500 in her Year 13 annual examinations.
Mr. Votuwale, a 55-year-old kava farmer from Bouma Village, Taveuni, shared his family’s journey and the sacrifices made to prioritize their children’s education. To ensure greater educational opportunities, the family moved to Valebasoga, leaving their familiar village life behind. Mr. Votuwale acknowledged the challenges of this decision, as he balances being the family’s sole income provider while prioritizing his children’s needs.
Reflecting on their own educational setbacks due to financial constraints, he and his wife determined not to let their children face the same obstacles. Maraia’s achievements come as no surprise to her father, as she consistently displayed dedication and hard work, having previously earned the dux title for Fiji’s Year 12 Certificate Examination.
With aspirations of becoming an accountant, Maraia expressed heartfelt gratitude for her parents’ sacrifices. “As the head girl, I aimed to set a good example, which motivated me to strive for the dux award,” she stated. Her commitment inspires confidence that she will continue to honor her family’s sacrifices and make them proud.
This story is not just about academic success, but also about the remarkable impact of parental dedication and support in shaping the futures of their children. Maraia’s achievements serve as a beacon of hope, showcasing how determination and hard work can lead to fulfilling one’s dreams against all odds.
