Political Turmoil: Fiji’s MPs Clash Over Controversial Vote

Four former Members of Parliament (MPs) from FijiFirst were prohibited from entering the Opposition Chambers on March 5, 2025, following their controversial vote in favor of a motion to amend the 2013 Constitution. The MPs, including Sanjay Kirpal, expressed their confusion over being labeled as unwelcome and facing derogatory remarks from fellow Opposition members.

Kirpal addressed the issue during a parliamentary session, noting that he was told by another MP that he did not belong in the Chamber, and he was referred to as a “snake.” He raised concerns about the perceived double standards from the Opposition regarding their stance on the suspension of Standing Orders—something they had supported during past administrations without objection.

Despite the backlash, the four Independent MPs intend to file a complaint with the Speaker’s Office, seeking a formal inquiry into their treatment. Speaker Filimone Jitoko indicated he would await the written correspondence from the MPs before making any decisions.

The situation reflects ongoing tensions within Fiji’s Parliament and highlights a broader issue regarding the decorum and functionality of the legislative body. Past commentary from former officials, including ex-Parliament Secretary-General Mary Chapman, has pointed to a decline in respectful discourse among MPs, likening the environment to a “Banana Parliament.”

This scenario not only showcases the struggle for procedural clarity within Fiji’s parliamentary system but also underscores the necessity for productive dialogue among parliamentarians. As Fiji navigates these challenges, the hope remains that these discussions can pave the way for a more respectful and constructive political environment that honors the principles of democracy.

Overall, the incident emphasizes the need for unity and civility in political discourse, vital for the advancement of Fiji’s democratic processes.
