Opposition MP Premila Kumar has recently countered assertions made by Deputy Prime Minister Manoa Kamikamica regarding alleged economic mismanagement under the previous FijiFirst Government. Kumar challenges the government to provide evidence and take legal action instead of making general accusations. She referred to Kamikamica’s comments as “tired excuses” and emphasized that they lack substantiation.

Highlighting the achievements of her party, Kumar noted that during the FijiFirst Government, the economy experienced remarkable growth, with the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) doubling from $6 billion to nearly $12 billion and per capita income increasing from $6,600 to over $13,000. She also pointed out that foreign reserves rose significantly from $500 million in 2006 to over $3 billion, alongside a reduction in the poverty rate to 24.1 percent.

Kumar criticized the current Coalition Government’s economic strategies, particularly the recent increases in VAT and corporate tax, asserting that these actions exacerbate the existing economic challenges. She deemed the decision to raise taxes during a period of high inflation as illogical and detrimental, further aggravating the cost of living crisis for many Fijian families.

Additionally, Kumar expressed concerns regarding the Coalition Government’s increase in ministerial appointments and extravagant spending, questioning their commitment to cost-cutting as promised during the election. She urged the government to take accountability for policies that have escalated living expenses and negatively impacted the economic situation for ordinary citizens.

This ongoing discourse showcases the contrasting economic narratives from both political sides and highlights the pressing need for accountability and effective strategies to uplift all Fijians amid rising living costs. There remains optimism that addressing these challenges can lead to a more supportive economic environment for the citizens of Fiji.
